Sunday Salon – 30 May 2009

Hello Sunday Saloners and regular readers!  I hope you all had a wonderful week, I know I did.  I’m officially back from vacation!  I did have internet access, so I have been commenting and posting a little.  As my mom said, “Hello!  It’s 2009.  Did you really think we wouldn’t have internet access?”

I read almost all the books, every single one except Beyond a Burning Sea.  I’m pretty proud of that!  I have quite a few reviews to write, so I’m working on that now.

After publishing my post on 2666, a couple folks commented about their interest in learning more about Latin American lit, especially boom and post boom.  While I’m not an expert, I was a Spanish major, with the majority of my concentration in Latin American lit.  It’s one of the topics I’m most passionate about and I could probably talk about it for days.   I was thinking about having a feature where I highlighted one author and talked about their work?  Especially ones that a lot of authors that are very famous with Spanish-language readers, but need more US exposure.  Would this be something you’d be interested in reading?  Let me know!

Have a wonderful week everyone, and happy reading!

  1. That would be a wonderful feature! As I said in my post on your 2666 wrap-up, I’m just starting to get into Latin American lit, and I feel like I know quite a few of the more popular authors, but would love to know more about the ones who might be considered “hidden gems”. I recently took out a volume dedicated to Latin American authors at the library (short stories and excerpts from novels), and I’m hoping I’ll find some new names that way, but I’d love to hear your thoughts!

  2. I would love to see a feature like that. I started out as a Spanish major in college, but then switched to Linguistics, so I still have an interest in Latin American lit (although my ability to read it in the original language has greatly diminished).

  3. Would be very interested in reading more Latin American lit, and will keep checking in to see what you come up with. Still working on 2666 so am holding off reading your post until after I finish. Happy reading!

  4. Not only would I would be interested, but would you mind sending a short list of titles and authors for Color Online? I’m putting a list for reference and while it won’t be comprehensive, I’m hoping readers find it to be a good starting point.

By the way, you answered today’s quiz correctly. Thank you.

  5. I’d definitely be interested in hearing about Latin American authors. I haven’t read very many and probably couldn’t even list authors off on one hand. South American is different, but even then I don’t know a ton. Hope you’re having a great weekend! Sounds like the trip was a lot of fun.

  6. Nice post!

Was wondering if you’d be kind enough to write up a review of any of those books or some other ones you’re read before for publication on our blog?

We have a very vibrant book review site visited by over 4 thousand unique book-loving people.

Have a look and leave a comment on the blog, I will get back to you.

  7. I think introducing Latin American authors is a great idea.
I finished the first section of 2666 but haven’t written about it yet, am waiting to read other comments after I post mine.

  8. I would definitely love to be reading about Latin American lit. My only exposure to them are the authors available in the Philippines when I was still a student. I’ve stuck to them still, mainly (Garcia Marquez, Isabel Allende, Sandra Cisneros, Laura Esquivel), as I have no idea whom else to explore. I have a few names I can think of now, but have not explored their works so much or yet. :)
